What is an EPDM membrane ?
The EPDM membrane (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a popular choice for flat or low-slope roofs, both residential and commercial. This single-ply synthetic rubber membrane is known for its durability, weather resistance, and easy maintenance. It is often chosen for its longevity and flexibility, even after decades of exposure.
The EPDM membrane offers an estimated lifespan of around 25 years, depending on maintenance, weather exposure, rooftop activities, and thickness.

How is an EPDM membrane roof installed?
The installation of an EPDM membrane is a precise process that must be carried out by qualified professionals. Thanks to its flexibility and flame-free application, EPDM is a safe, durable, and efficient solution for flat or low-slope roofs.
1. Surface preparation
The roof surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, debris, oil, or moisture. The substrate (often a concrete slab or an insulating panel) must be dry, smooth, and stable.
2. Installation of insulation (if required)
A thermal insulator may be installed beneath the membrane, depending on the building’s energy requirements. It is either mechanically fastened or glued, depending on the type of system selected.
3. Positioning the membrane
The EPDM membrane is unrolled, laid out, and left flat to allow full relaxation before fastening. This ensures proper adhesion and eliminates wrinkles.
4. Membrane fastening
Three methods are possible:
-Glued with a specific adhesive (the most common)
-Mechanically fastened using fasteners and plates
-Ballasted with gravel (ballast system)
5. Sealing the seams
The joints between membrane sheets are sealed using adhesive tapes or specialized glues, ensuring perfect and long-lasting watertightness.
6. Finishing and inspection
Upstands, corners, drains, and other details are sealed with preformed pieces or sealant. A final inspection ensures the installation meets all standards and requirements.
Even though EPDM requires little maintenance, a visual inspection is recommended in the fall and spring, particularly to check joints, water drains, and any possible punctures caused by frequent roof use (foot traffic, equipment, etc.).
