What is a monolithic roof?
Monolithic membrane roofs are a preferred solution for surfaces requiring perfect waterproofing, such as building roofs, terraces, concrete parking decks, and inverted roofing systems. This type of membrane is particularly valued for its ability to form a seamless surface, eliminating the weak points typical of traditional systems.
The monolithic membrane offers an estimated lifespan of about 25 years.
How is a monolithic membrane roof installed?
The installation of a monolithic membrane roof follows a rigorous technical process, typically carried out by specialized professionals. Here are the main steps involved:
1. Surface preparation
Complete cleaning of the concrete slab or substrate: dust, grease, debris, and moisture are removed. Cracks or visible defects are repaired. Slopes are checked to ensure proper water drainage.
2. Application of a primer
A primer is applied to the surface to ensure better adhesion of the membrane. This layer dries quickly and prepares the substrate to receive the main product.
3. Application of the monolithic membrane
Rubberized bitumen is applied in liquid form using a sprayer or trowel. It is spread in a continuous, uniform layer without overlaps or seams, ensuring maximum watertightness. The thickness is carefully controlled to meet the manufacturer’s standards.
4. Drying and curing time
The product forms a flexible and durable membrane after a curing period of 24 to 48 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. During this time, the surface must be protected from weather exposure.
5. Finishing and inspection
The thickness, continuity of the membrane, drains, and flashings are inspected. Watertightness tests (e.g., water test) may be performed if required. In the case of an inverted roof, an insulation layer and a protective covering (gravel or slabs) are installed over the membrane.
Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure the longevity of the system, especially around drains and drainage points. It is highly recommended to call on a monolithic roofing specialist for any maintenance or annual inspection.
