What is a TPO membrane ?
The TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) membrane is a single-ply roofing system that is increasingly popular in the commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors. Valued for its solar reflectivity, chemical resistance, and installation flexibility, TPO is an excellent solution for buildings seeking to improve their energy efficiency while ensuring long-lasting waterproofing.
The TPO membrane offers an estimated lifespan of about 20 years, depending on maintenance, weather exposure, rooftop activity, and membrane thickness.

How is a TPO membrane roof installed?
The installation of a TPO membrane is carried out safely, without the use of flames, and follows a rigorous process to ensure long-lasting and uniform waterproofing. This type of membrane is often installed on commercial or industrial buildings seeking energy efficiency and a professional finish.
1. Surface preparation
The existing roof is inspected and thoroughly cleaned. All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, or debris. In case of renovation, old membranes or non-compliant insulation materials may be removed.
2. Installation of insulation
A rigid insulator (often made of polyisocyanurate or EPS) is mechanically fastened or glued. It enhances thermal performance and provides a stable base for the membrane.
3. Positioning the TPO membrane
The TPO membrane is unrolled in sheets over the entire insulated surface. It is left to relax to release tension and facilitate upcoming welds.
4. Hot-air seam welding
The overlaps between membrane sheets are welded using hot-air equipment, creating uniform, watertight, and durable seams without the use of an open flame.
5. Details and finishing
Upstands, corners, flashings, drains, and specific points are sealed with prefabricated TPO accessories or cut membrane pieces. A compatible sealant is also applied when necessary.
6. Final inspection
A thorough inspection is carried out to verify the uniformity of the welds, the strength of the fastenings, and the quality of the detailed finishes. Tests may be conducted if required.
TPO requires little maintenance, but a visual roof inspection in the fall and spring is always recommended. When needed, it is recommended to clean with a manufacturer-approved product to improve reflectivity.
